This Thursday, one of America’s living legends rolls jauntily into the Beachland, riding high atop a 25 year-old wave of touring and recording that’s still crashing parties and blowing people over with pure joy. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, New Orleans ambassadors of funk and soul, arrives to celebrate life, love, good food, good grooves, and the 25th anniversary of their legendary record, Feet Don’t Fail Me Now.
Last we heard from The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, they recorded a version of Marvin Gaye’s classic soul record, What’s Going On? as a response to New Orleans’ suffering by Hurricane Katrina. Actor Harry Shearer, now a resident of New Orleans, created an audio documentary that tells the tale of these musicians’ response to a homegrown international tragedy (subscription). A podcast provided by Straight No Chaser interviews the Dirty Dozen’s baritone player Roger Lewis, and discusses his musical career and perspective as a musician working within the New Orleans tradition.
