Sufjan Stevens / Cryptasize – SOLD OUT.

24 09 2009

Sufjan Stevens fans, we hope you woke up this morning with your tickets for tonight’s show safely esconced underneath your pillows, or clutched in your sweaty palms, or in that same safe drawer where you keep your meds/contacts.  Because, as you might know, tonight’s Sufjan Stevens show is sold out!

To prep you for what Stevens might throw your way, here’s an excerpt from his upcoming work, The BQE, a tribute to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.  This is part six, as performed on WNYC in New York City:

And if that weren’t enough of a clue to Stevens’ far-ranging vision, here’s a trailer for The BQE film:

And to get you extra-excited, we take it back to Brooklyn with a 2007 review (yes, he’s been working on The BQE for a while) from Brooklyn Vegan.

As Asthmatic Kitty states:

Sufjan Stevens is proud to present The BQE, a cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Hula-Hoop. Commissioned by Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), The BQE was originally performed in the Howard Gilman Opera House in celebration of the 25th anniversary Next Wave Festival in October of 2007….The resulting album might be best described as a grand creative franchise-incorporating movie, symphony, comic book, dissertation, photography, graphic design, and a 3-D Viewmaster® reel-in which a songwriter’s interrogation of one of New York’s ugliest landmarks expands athletically to forums and formulas outside of the song itself. In fact, the BQE is everything but a song.

Now, it’s very conceivable that the production values for The BQE might not make touring with this piece possible, however, we’re sure that Sufjan will have a couple surprises up his sleeve for tonight.

After the Sufjan Stevens/Cryptasize show, The Lighthouse and The Whaler will perform a FREE show in the Tavern.  Here’s a vid of them, a bit wobbly but with killer audio:
