Sunday, Pierced Arrows; Monday, Farmer’s Market; an open call for art

1 10 2010

Scarcity of Tanks, opening for Pierced Arrows, Sunday October 3

Age is an issue of mind over matter.  If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.  ~Mark Twain

Somewhere within the guts, veins, and bone of rock n’ roll, there exist the urge to stave off death.  Rock n’ roll wants to steal that withering scythe and its shadowy cloak in order to wave away the smoke of total finality. This is pagan stuff: devouring your enemies, or consuming that which you seek to become, in order to provide the gift of life everlasting.  Maybe that’s why Pierced Arrows’ Fred Cole looks not unlike a wizard with his now-legendary garage-punk trio, Pierced Arrows.

Pierced Arrows is an offshoot of gnarly old Dead Moon, a trio consisting of Cole, his wife Tootie on bass, and drummer Andrew Loomis.  They sounded like Buffalo Springfield far too gone on speed and peyote, listening to Aussie punk records; they raged with a passion that stretched beyond any technical aspects.  Drums could be off, guitar strings might snap, and the sound could be a shambles, but Dead Moon kept rockin’, railing against the dying of the light:

“Let It Rain”, Pierced Arrows

“Paranoia”, Pierced Arrows

This Sunday night, Pierced Arrows plays with other vets rattled by rock over the years: Scarcity of Tanks have been toiling collectively and individually over the decades.  Vocalist Matt Wascovich got a late start assembling and fronting a band, but fortunately has fallen in with such talented cronies as (for this gig): drummer Scott Pickering , bluesman Ted Flynn, and bass monster Jeff Deasy.  Between touring, garnering lovely press in Signal To Noise and LA Weekly, SOT’s managed to squeeze out a new record, Bleed Now, out on Parisian label Textile Records.  Here’s a bit of their SST-meets-CLE vibe:

Also on this Sunday night bill are the most excellent Exploding Lies. Getcher tix NOW, friends.

Arts Collinwood, complements of cleveland.com

In other Beachland-related news, our friends at Arts Collinwood are submitting an open call for art and ‘art happenings’ that utilize their entire space in a non-traditional way. Guidelines are that artists must set the work up themselves, and provide your own materials. The work must also be semi permanent, or performance based.  Art happenings must also occur during the Arts Collinwood Cafe’s operating hours, which are Tues – Sat 11am – 11pm, and Sundays 11 – 10pm.  These events, installations and performances start Friday, October 8th, and run until the end of the year.

Painters, sculptors, dancers, multi-media artists, and any mad innovators are encouraged to participate.  The proposals are piling in, however, and available time/space is limited! Submit your proposal to r.washington@artscollinwood.org, or contact Arts Collinwood at 216.692.9500.

Coit Road Farmers' Market, complements of tiscleveland.com

Beachland Weekend, Cleveland-style

13 01 2010

In this ish of the Beachland blog, we keep up with the compliments, following from our New Year’s series of posts regarding the upcoming 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY. Submitted by you, the public:

As some of the others who have posted about their experiences, it’s very difficult to pick the best musical moment from my many visits to the Beachland.   I have never been truly disappointed with any show; I’ve always heard (or seen) something that made the trip worthwhile; sometimes it was an opening band that I had never heard, other times it was some of the, well, interesting people in the audience.

One such moment does stand out- several of us went to the Tavern to see Rosie Flores and Katy Moffatt.  It was one of the rare two shows in one night bills.  Rosie and Katy were great (the shots of tequila we did with Rosie didn’t hurt that impression).   The second show was Chuck Prophet.  I was vaguely aware of Chuck from Green on Red, but was not familiar with any of his solo work.  Our original intent was to leave after the first show, since I believe it was a weekday, and we also thought we might have to pay for the second show.  When it became apparent that we were not going to get kicked out before Chuck came on, and seeing that he had a full band, along with a funky microphone from what looked like the 1940’s in addition to the more typical gear, we decided to stay.
What a revelation.  There is nothing like seeing a live act for the first time that is able to rise above the listeners’ unfamiliarity with his songs, and yet immediately get them over in a memorable way.  The band was tight, Chuck was engaging, and the songs were fantastic.  We stumbled out at the end of the night commenting about how it was just another example of the Beachland magic.

I’ve been a believer in the redemptive power of live music since seeing Eli Radish in the front of a Chesterland shopping plaza at the age of 12.   I’ve never stopped going to shows, but there was a bleak period of time in Cleveland for roots music after the original Wilbert’s closed and the Beachland’s opening.  It is without question my favorite place to see live music, and I’ve been fortunate enough to go to plenty, both here in Cleveland and in other cities across the country.

Since you are reading this, you are probably already a fan of the Beachland.  Make it your New Year’s resolution to drag some friends out to see some live music-you know who I’m referring to, the people who were once into music, but just can’t find the time or energy to get out to shows anymore.  I guarantee they will thank you later.   The Beachland and the other live venues in town are as worthy of our support as the other cultural institutions in our city- the museums, orchestra and theaters, all of which get more attention and public funding.  And, I would argue, the support of venues like the Beachland is more important to the 20 to 35 year-olds that this region desperately needs to retain, and to attract.
So, step out with your buds, and feel the redemptive body and soul experience of live music.  Music Saves, indeed.  God bless Cindy and Mark-here’s to another 10 years!

Vince Slusarz, Gotta Groove Records

There are SO many musicians who deliver an absolutely transformative experience on your stage, but hands-down, my personal favorite was:

Nick Lowe (acoustic)–It was in the ballroom, but it felt so intimate…like he was in a living room, singing to you, only.  And he has such an ease with a guitar in his hands…he is truly a master of his craft.

Runner up is Greg Cartwright.  No matter what he’s belting out, he really makes you feel it, too

Karen Downie

Railroad Earth just sounds so wonderful in the Beachland Ballroom. I just love the venue. Great acoustics and all. But then of course I would love Railroad Earth if they were playing under a bridge.

Mary Lynn Pirtz

Tonight, we’ve got one of our favorites, Alejandro Escovedo, who you might’ve read about on this very blog.   This Thursday, we’ve got the feisty pop of Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles, written about in Scene Magazine, and who’ve been in steady rotation on new Cleveland radio station 107.3 The Boom.

Saturday’s a soul session, celebrating the birthday of Beachland co-owner Mark Leddy, with noisy blues breakers The Bassholes and northern soul colossus Melvin Davis.  Don’t be afraid of the dance floor, friends.

Pro-Cleveland blogger Cleveland Bachelor has helped us push this Sunday’s upcoming Rural Alberta Advantage / Buried Wires / The Octagon show, which you can read about HERE.

As Bryan Ferry once crooned, “Don’t stop the dance”: even the coiffed and laquered Mr. Ferry might have to cut a rug at this Sunday’s Beachland Polka Brunch!  Co –sponsored by The Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame, the price of admission also includes a delicious brunch and a free polka dance lesson by world dance champion Valerie Salstrom from Get Hep Swing.  Polka’s a family affair, so grab the crew for a twirl and a tipple:

Preview and Now-view: Up Ensemble @ Waterloo Cafe; Unsparing Sea & Walk On Waterloo

26 08 2009
Cracker, Looking Up

Cracker, Looking Up

This electronic candygram is coming your way fast: open the door, get your prize, and look inside. Waterloo awaits this week.

Say you’re looking for a “date night” spot, and oh, this might be the first time around for both of you? We can’t think of a better spot for the both of you to bask in than the Waterloo Cafe, right down the corner from the Beachland.  Good food, refreshing beverages, mellow company, and the sexy, swingin’ sound of acclaimed Cleveland jazz trio Up Ensemble.  The Waterloo Cafe, located at 15601 Waterloo Road, starts this informal but classy musical affair at 9 pm. If your dates goes well, request the standard “Embraceable You”; if things turn sour, ask Up to play the entirety of Ornette Coleman’s This Is Our Music, and lose yourself in ecstatic hollerin’ while your date’s droning voice fades into the distance.

If you’re not feeling the miracle of bop but would rather feel the mystery of Lake Erie in sound, dig on Unsparing Sea, who open for The Rural Alberta Advantage, tonight in the Beachland Tavern.  This group, whose moaning slide guitars and rumbling cello bring to mind bands like Slint and The Dirty Three, are making a splash (I know, sorry) with their latest EP, In the Crystal Canyon (reviewed here at WeHateYourHate).  Meanwhile, Unsparing Sea is preparing its newest full-length, entitled In The Diamond Caverns, slated for an October release.  Here’s “Wolves At A Wedding”:

If you’re looking for a Thursday night pick-me-up, to restore your faith in all things Cleveland, make plans for Walk All Over Waterloo, an informal crawl of the block featuring galleries, shops, food, booze, and yes, even music. Isn’t that a shock?  Us? Music, food, drink?  Yep.  And down the street from us, electro-funque duo Arte Povera will perform at Exit Stencil Recording Studios, while ArtsCollinwood throws a mini-benefit starting at 5 pm, featuring artwork by Scott Radke, Dott Schneider, Niko Angelis, and–guess–food!  At the rate we’re going, somebody will have to step up and put a gym on this block.  Hell, a proper bike trail will do.  Somebody call the County!

Now, for your pleasure, a thrilling preview of this weekend’s upcoming rock action with Cracker and those Cleveland cads of cowpunk, the Whiskey Daredevils.  This slice of excitement is brought to you by the good people at Addicted To Vinyl and Cleveland Bachelor.  Take it away, gentlemen!
